Ilorin Emirate Sets Stage for 2026 Grand Durbar Celebration

The Ilorin Emirate Durbar Committee has unveiled an elaborate cultural, security and economic plans for the 2026 Ilorin Emirate Grand Durbar Celebration, with organisers promising a world-class festival that will showcase the rich heritage and diversity of the ancient emirate.

Speaking to Arewa PUNCH in Ilorin on Monday, the Chairman of the Committee, Engr. Suleiman Alapansanpa said the 2026 edition of the Durbar would be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Kwara Baseball Park, Adewole, Ilorin.

Alapansanpa explained that the theme of the celebration, “Prosperity in Diversity,” reflects the historical coexistence of various ethnic and cultural groups within Ilorin Emirate over several centuries.

He stressed that the Emirate remained a symbol of unity where Fulani, Yoruba, Nupe, Baruba, Hausa, Kanuri, Gobirawa and other communities had continued to live peacefully while contributing to the growth and prosperity of the city.

“The theme captures the very essence of Ilorin itself. For centuries, Ilorin has stood as a remarkable meeting point of civilisations, cultures, languages, scholarship, and commerce,” Alapansanpa said.

“In a world increasingly confronted by division, intolerance, and social fragmentation, Ilorin continues to offer a timeless example of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and shared destiny,” he added.

The committee chairman disclosed that no fewer than 500 horses would participate in the grand procession during the Durbar, describing equestrian displays as the pride and central attraction of the festival.

Alapansanpa also assured residents and visitors of adequate security arrangements, noting that the committee had partnered with major security agencies to guarantee a peaceful celebration amid prevailing security concerns in the country.

“For security, we are very serious about it. We understand the current situation in the country. We want to tighten security with the power of God. We have engaged the security agencies including the army, police, NSCDC, and others,” he said.

He further revealed that closed-circuit television cameras would be mounted at strategic locations across the venue and other key areas to enhance surveillance and crowd management during the event.

“There would be CCTV cameras mounted at strategic locations, and there will be no room for politics there,” Alapansanpa declared.

The Durbar Committee chairman pointed out that the palace and the Durbar institution would remain non-partisan, insisting that the festival belonged to all sons and daughters of Ilorin regardless of political, religious or social affiliations.

As part of efforts to modernise and preserve the cultural festival, Alapansanpa announced the establishment of a Directorate of Storytelling, Digital Media and Cultural Documentation to digitally archive and project the history and traditions of the Ilorin Emirate to global audiences.

He said the initiative would focus on documentary storytelling, historical interpretation, digital archiving, educational content, and immersive cultural communication aimed at connecting younger generations and international visitors with the heritage of Ilorin.

“Importantly, this effort is not about replacing tradition with technology. It is about using modern tools in service of preservation, education, and cultural continuity,” he said.

The committee also introduced the Ilorin Durbar Vendor Fair and Cultural Market Experience, designed to create opportunities for local businesses, artisans, creatives, fashion brands, food vendors and entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services during the celebration.

According to Alapansanpa, the initiative would help stimulate tourism, hospitality, transportation, local commerce, and youth entrepreneurship while positioning Ilorin as a global cultural destination.

“We believe culture should not only be preserved; it should also create prosperity for the people,” he remarked further.

He noted that organisers had already registered about 77 households as part of community participation and preparations for the festival.

Alapansanpa, who acknowledged the support of the Emir of Ilorin, government officials, security agencies, sponsors and media organisations, invited tourists, researchers, investors and members of the Nigerian diaspora to attend the celebration and experience the rich cultural heritage of the Ilorin Emirate, affirmed that the Ilorin Emirate Grand Durbar is a vibrant annual cultural and royal spectacle celebrated two days after the Eid-al-Adha (Sallah) festival, featuring a majestic procession led by the Emir of Ilorin, accompanied by beautifully adorned horsemen, traditional musicians, and thousands of residents in colorful traditional attire.
