Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, in Abuja, where both leaders discussed Nigeria’s worsening economic and security challenges.
Atiku, who recently emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general election, disclosed details of the visit in a post on his verified X handle.
The meeting came days after a keenly contested primary election in which Atiku defeated Amaechi and another aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, by a wide margin. Atiku polled 1,846,370 votes to beat Amaechi, who secured 504,117 votes, while Hayatu-Deen garnered 177,120 votes.
Explaining the purpose of the visit, Atiku said discussions centred on the “troubling state of the nation,” with particular focus on economic hardship and rising insecurity.
He stressed the need for collaboration among patriotic Nigerians to proffer lasting solutions.
“This afternoon, I visited my brother and compatriot… Beyond the warmth and camaraderie, we had deep and honest conversations about the troubling state of our nation, the growing economic pain, insecurity, and the urgent responsibility on patriotic Nigerians to continue engaging in the search for solutions,” he wrote.
The former Vice President also used the opportunity to felicitate Amaechi on his birthday, adding a light-hearted note to the meeting.
While the visit signals a possible reconciliation move within the party following the primary contest, Atiku did not explicitly state whether political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections were discussed.
Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, is yet to publicly comment on the outcome of the meeting as of the time of filing this report.
The development comes amid heightened political realignments and consultations across party lines as stakeholders begin early moves ahead of the next general election cycle.
