Chairman Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission killed by Gas explosion

Resident around Sabon Tasha Total Tank station in Kaduna experience terrible gas explosion, one that claims scores of lives. Eyewitness at the scene of the gory gas explosion said that professor Mallam, 64, was one of the trapped persons in the calamity.

Throughout the years he has specialized in nuclear physics, health physics, instruments, and dosimetry. Other specializations he had were in the area of solid-state physics, life sciences and radiation application, as well as in the safety and management of radioactive waste.

He was acting director of the Center for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Zari, on several occasions, from the year 1999 to 2006.

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sadness over the gas explosion which led to the death of the Chairman, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, Professor Simon Mallam, his son and three others at Sabon Tasha area of Kaduna on Saturday.

Garba Shehu, the special spokesperson to the president on media and publicity made this known via his verified Twitter account on Sunday evening.

Reacting to the incident, President Buhari said: “I am deeply touched by this unfortunate incident that claimed the lives of Professor Simon Mallam, his son and others.

“The death of the erudite Professor has robbed Nigeria of a great scientist whose services were acutely needed at a time we are increasing emphasis on science and technology for development.

“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to his family and those of other victims of the gas explosion. May God comfort these families and give them the fortitude to bear the loss,” President Buhari added.
